Excerpt from the book 'Bloody Clash at Sadzot' by William B. Breuer [page 244] Also just inside the woods in front of Sadzot, Staff Sergeant William A. Witham, a 27-year-old squad leader from Ohio, was positioning his men in anticipation of a German assault.... He had just moved forward past Private Joseph A. Chevalier, a 20-year-old rifleman from Massachusetts, when the rapid chatter of German automatic weapons nearby crackled through the forest. Two SS grenadiers with burp guns had spotted the approaching Witham, leaped out from behind trees, and [page 245] cut down the valiant sergeant who fell down in the snow.
