General Commends Roseville Man
Pfc. Charles M. Cann son of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Cann, of Roseville, was one of 51 men commended by Leiut. Gen. Mark Clark for conduct during action in Italy.
A member of a parachute scout company, Cann participated in daring raids on four islands in the Mediterranean in which 116 German officers and men were captured.
Ordered to "occupy the islands" the scouts first landed on the beach of one island and learned from natives that 95 German soldiers were occupying a strongly fortified position. By clever deception they led the enemy to believe the island was attacked by a large number of Americans and so captured the entire contingent.
Later the scouts, sometimes together, sometimes singly, and other times in small groups, occupied the three other islands, capturing an additional 18 German soldiers and three officers.
Pfc. Cann recieved his intantry training at Camp Croft, S.C. He was wounded in action. - Article from Zanesville Times Recorder
